TheincidentreferredtoappearstobeSirNicholasThrogmorton’strialforcomplicityintheattempttomakeLadyJaneGreyQueenofEngland,achargeofwhichhewasacquitted。ThissoangeredQueenMarythatsheimprisonedhimintheTower,andfinedthejurorsfromonetotwothousandpoundseach。Heractionterrifiedsucceedingjuries,sothatSirNicholas’sbrotherwascondemnedonnostrongerevidencethanthatwhichhadfailedtoprevailbefore。WhileSirNicholas’sdefensemayhavebeenbrilliant,itmustbeadmittedthattheevidencewasweak。

HewaslaterreleasedfromtheTower,andunderElizabethwasoneofagroupofcommissionerssentbythatprincessintoScotland,tofomenttroublewithMary,QueenofScots。Whentheattemptbecameknown,Elizabethrepudiatedtheactsofheragents,butSirNicholas,havinganticipatedthispossibility,hadsufficientforesighttosecureendorsementofhisplanbytheCouncil,andsooutwittedElizabeth,whowasplayingatwo—facedrole,andCecil,oneofthegreateststatesmenwhoeverheldthepostofprincipalminister。Perhapsitwasthisincidenttowhichthecompanyreferred,whichmightinpartexplainElizabeth’srejoinder。However,hehadbeenrestoredtoconfidenceerethis,andhadservedasambassadortoFrance。

Indeed,thestoryofthevariousprintingsof1601isalmostlegendary。
